Henri Cartier-Bresson e l’Italia

A journey through 160 shots and archival material, revealing an extraordinary cross-section of our country, signed by the photographer defined as the eye of the century.

Organised in collaboration with the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation in Paris, the exhibition focuses on the key moments in the photographer's career from the 1930s onwards.

In 1932, Cartier-Bresson visited Italy for the first time and defined certain themes that would characterise his entire oeuvre, such as the extraordinary management of pictorial space, the relationship between reality and fiction, and the ability to capture the moment. Returning to Italy after the Second World War, he worked as a photojournalist for various international newspapers, documenting not only the malaise and criticism of the southern social context, but also the extraordinary traditions and innovations introduced by the agrarian reform.

During the same period, he moved between Rome, Naples and Venice, photographing everyday life in the cities and portraying the intellectuals of the time.

Finally, we come to the 1970s, when Cartier-Bresson focused on the relationship between man and machine and the industrialisation of the south of the country: reportages on the Olivetti factory in Pozzuoli and the Alfa Romeo factory in Pomigliano d'Arco.
